Recently, we’ve seen a resurgent interest in grain sourcing and farming practices, even amongst the industry heavy-hitters (Heaven Hill and WhistlePig, for example), but if you want to talk about farm-to-bottle, few American distillers are doing it better than Far North. Founded in 2013 by Chris and Elizabeth Montana in Minnesota, sustainability and environmental responsibility has been at the forefront of their ethos since the beginning. The Montanas utilize estate-grown grains from their own farm with a focus on regenerative farming, which aims to enrich the soil, conserve water, and promote biodiversity. Spent grain is donated to local farmers for animal feed, and renewable energy sources and recycled materials are used in the production of their delicious spirits, which have become a staple in our shop.
This Bonded Hazlet Rye is one of the first single varietal whiskeys Mike ever distilled, with 95% of the mash made up of the hammer-milled grain, and remaining 5% malted at Vertical Malts in Crookston, MN.
Double distilled in a hybrid pot still and aged 4 years in new oak from Black Swan Barrels in Park Rapids, MN, this expression has become an exemplary expression of what Hazlet has to offer, leading with sweet caramel and creme brûlée with notes of cognac and vanilla caviar.
